Glow plugs — integral components of modern diesel engines, designed to facilitate its «cold» start. Modern glow plugs are a complex electric heating element with a coiled resistor. The glow plug rod protrudes into the combustion chamber (or pre-chamber) of the diesel engine, so that its tip is located on the border of the swirl of the working mixture created by the nozzle.
The main purpose of the glow plugs is to heat the injected fuel to a temperature at which it evaporates, mixes well with the incoming air and easily ignites already as a result of the compression created in the engine cylinders.
The basic scheme of ISKRA glow plugs
1. Pin or Threaded Connector – Pins or Terminals are protected with special material treatment to resist corrosion and ensure reliable power connection.
2. Insulator – The glow plug insulator has excellent strength, insulation and thermal conductivity to avoid of any possible short circuit.
3. Housing – Dimensions of glow plug housing is important for engine inbuilt. At the same time its functions is to provide heat resistance and also to protect inside parts.
4. Seal – A rubber seal prevents any further air contact which could lead to coil corrosion.
5. Insulation – Magnesium oxide powder is used for insulation material, which has also excellent features as heat conductor.
6. Electrode – Inside of the glow plug, electrode provides supply of electrical energy to the coils.
7. Regulating Coil – The main function of the Regulating Coil is to effective control current draw for fast heat-up of the Heating Coil.
8. Coil Connection – Laser welding technology assure reliable connects between Heating and Regulating coils and maintain their position at all times and ensure consistent resistance features.
9. Heating Coil – A shorter coil inside of the end of the glow plug enable a flash start even in very cold conditions. The post-heating temperature could be extended also after cold start, which results to significant lower engine emissions.
10.Heater tube – The reduced diameter of heater tube ensures improved heating efficiency and overall excellent performance.
With half a century of experience in the design and manufacture of diesel engine cold start products, Hidria is one of the leading glow plug manufacturers and suppliers for the most famous European car manufacturers such as Volkswagen Group, Renault-Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroen, MAN and many more. ISKRA glow plugs are known in many countries of the world. The product range covers 98% of the fleet of diesel vehicles and agricultural machinery.
A number of glow plugs of the ISKRA brand are specially designed and adapted for use on machinery and engines manufactured in the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation.
